After posting the poll below i did some more research and discovered that the PHPBB authentication mechanism is actually well documented on one of the black hat sites i use sometimes. With the details i was able to create a kind of sync utility which can sync your furrtrax account to the forums safely and securely.
You will find a Sync button on your My Profile pages on the FurrTrax website only, NOT in the app. It will sync your account to the forum, and then take you there a second later where you can simply login using the same username and password as you do for FurrTrax, if you change your FurrTrax password, Avatar or details, you just need to click the Sync button and the changes will be synced to the forums.
