Rules of the road Posted by: Shelby at 01-21-2014 20:26 PM, Last Modified 01-21-2014 21:05 PM |
Being me I have plenty of time to think and let my mind roam, although its been well over a year since I've written a story now is a good time to start again. When I was in basic training I thought of this story always meaning to write it down but never had the chance, instead of doing that I'll post it here. Hope you guys like it.
It's been 2 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days since patient zero infected his first victim in a Toronto airport. Since then the infection has spread like a modern day plague. The initial bite is just the start, the virus spreads into the system. After 7 hours the victim goes into shock, 13 hours they perish, and 14 hours they rise again too continue the vicious cycle. In the time it takes to be infected and to reanimate, a victim can get on a plan and fly to any major city only to spread the infection.
After 2 weeks the infection became a world wide epidemic. United States military units from all over were sent home to do there civic duty and protect the country they loved. They were ordered to protect the large cities and eliminate all infected. Martial Law was enacted to "protect" people. Unfortunately what the people did not know was that the threat was far worse then anyone expected.
After 1 month and 2 weeks Phoenix, Detroit, and Dallas had been overrun and infected. This was the beginning of the end..
Running for her life Shelby ran without turning back. Hundreds of those god-awful creatures were shambling towards her. Ever since the outbreak all major cities have been a war zone, both literally and figuratively.
She cut a corner running down a street into Atlanta's suburbs. There were always less undead around these areas. Stopping to catch her breath she walked to a tree leaning against it, although in the back of her mind she knew the horde was still on its way.
Shelby pulled up her radio calling out, "Charlie one-four do you copy?" After a moment of silence a static filled voice came on and replied, "This is Charlie one-four, I copy." Shelby looked around uneasy of the eeriness of the small quite neighborhood as she continued to walk her ears flicking about. "Charlie one-four I need immediate evac, I've got an army of ghouls after me, and I dont have any ammo to my name, do you copy." As she walked passed a house Shelby could see at least three ghouls inside stumbling about. Getting low to the ground as to not be noticed she began to crawl past. Suddenly the radio called out, "I copy, wolf pack is awaiting your evac location."
As the radio chirped out the undead inside looked in her direction and saw her. Before she could think to run the creatures jaw dropped and it let out a deep and hollow groan as it broke through the window onto the yard. Shelby sprinted off as the other two ghouls followed outside and after her shambling as they groaned alerting of there found prey. Just when it couldn't get worse more undead from nearby buildings and down the road have heard the hollowed moans and seen her.
"Sierra four-five do you copy?" Whilst sprinting down the street she answered the radio call, "Yes I fucking copy, I'm in the southern suburbs of the city, ETA better be right fucking now because you may have served the ghouls a nice meal." Shelby sprinted down the middle of the road, once again a horde of undead following her. Muttering curses as she ran, she headed for the highway a few blocks away, it'd be the best chance of being found at this point.
While running was not the problem, running in her ACU uniform was. Although all of society has broken down, what was left of her unit was told to stay in uniform. Because when a zombie apocalypse strikes you want to be in camo that doesn't work and run for your life in boots. Shelby thought of this almost to keep her mind at ease, to try and avoid the thought of the dozens of rotting flesh eating creatures behind her.
Suddenly as if the mission being compromised wasn't bad enough she trips. "Ohh fuck, fuck, fuck!" As Shelby begins to stand she gives in falling back down, ankle being sprained from the restriction of her boots and running had truly ruined any chance of getting out alive. She sat down and began to cry. The tears were not from the pain but from the realization of her impending death. The shambling horde being merely a few hundred yards away she had given in.
A ghoul came shambling from a house to the right. "What's up fuck head. You want a taste of me bitch? How about a bite off my tail huh?" She swayed her tail smirking as the creature was only yards away. Taking off her helmet she threw it at the creature as it continued unaffected. It's eyes wide, arms outstretched, mouth wide as it groaned shambling towards her.
"Come on bitch boy sweet female flesh right here!" Shelby smirked as it was mere feet from her now. This was a new world, new rules, and frankly she was finished with it. Why fight any longer in this hell.
The creature grabbed her IBV vest pulling it's gaping mouth to her shoulder as she merely chuckled closing here eyes.
A large crack whips through the air and the ghouls blood is splattered on Shelby's face as she opened her eyes the creatures body lay limp against her.
A man's voice rang out "Shelby!"
As she looked behind her Sergeant Davis was running to her.
"What th-" As soon as she began to speak the sergeant gave her a hand gun.
"We're leaving now!"
The horde of undead only yards from them collectively moved to them as he gripped the fiber handle on Shelby's IBV vest dragging her down the road as a humvee drove from around the intersection ahead.
Shelby limply held up her arm firing aimlessly into the horde as the humvee drove up. Stopping next to the soldiers the sergeant opened the door climbing in dragging Shelby with him.
As they drove towards the highway Shelby stared out of the window not speaking. Her tail flickered with mixed emotions, anger, sadness, relief, but worst of all the feeling of regret. But regret of what? Was it because she had given up or because she was saved.. The driver Corporal Smith looked back at her worriedly and spoke quietly to the sergeant as he climbed to the passenger seat.
It's a whole new world, everything we knew and loved was gone and replaced by this undead hell. The realization finally hit her as she continued to look at the ruins of the city.
